Why is it that I feel like a bad person when I admit, I’m not much of a fan of the Ellen DeGeneres show?  Like, I actually feel like I should keep it to myself, although clearly not enough to not mention it here….

You see, I am deeply committed to Oprah so will always check if she’s on before going elsewhere anyway, and really, without any hint of trying to be patronizing, I believe the two are opposite ends of the spectrum.  Although there can be only one Most Influential, and Powerful Media Queen, and to all you Ellen fans, I would say, she’s wearing the crown for the moment.

Even though I admit to not quite being the Ellen fan, my interest in the media, and entertainment, does mean that I switch over on and off to her, purely to try and work out her appeal.  And it suddenly dawned on me today, as to what a pure genius she is.

Let’s start firstly with the Ellen dance!  Now, I know again this won’t make me popular, but I don’t get its appeal enough to start every single show with it.  I mean I see everyone go nuts over it, but my brow is furrowed as I sit there and think “why?”

What I do love, is that all these straight, probably slightly more sheltered women than I know, sitting there in the audience absolutely erupt when the music starts, and Ellen starts slinking around the studio.

Yes I love that it’s all feel good, I get that, but what I do find a giggle, is that from what I know of lesbian circles, is that the dance that has become ‘Ellen’s signature dance’, is kind of the gay women’s dance.

I don’t know if it has a name, but I’ve seen it at many a gay club.  So I’m totally that she’s unwittingly got all these straight girls saluting the lesbian dance, although I’m sure they don’t get the link. The same girls that I think if they had a gay female friend, may not feel as comfortable as they seem to be with Ellen.

I LOVE that, as I say again, straight women are finally so accepting of a gay woman and hang on her every word.   Because someone’s sexuality has in so many areas, in the past, and still present day, been something that has been discussed in terms where it shouldn’t be a bloody issue.

So finally, thanks to Ellen, YES, of course we as women can relate to women that happen to fancy WOMEN.  Great, about time!

Although I feel that where Ellen has reached huge acceptance in the heterosexual community, I wonder why other gay women seem to not be so…. well, out?  I don’t believe anyone stays in the closet because they like dark, tight places.  They’re in there cause they fear what people will think if they come out.  Ellen couldn’t be more out, but I worry that the Ellen aftermath, hasn’t helped other gay women and stigma, as much as you’d think.

The other genius thing about Ellen is how she manages to weave hard-core, blatant self-promotion, and self-benefit, into being ‘fun’ for the audience!

For example, today she literally just delivered one line to the audience that left them cheering in their seats!  “I can say now, that my cover issue of O magazine, is out tomorrow!”

Two of her staff, then came out and extended the apparently ‘fun segment’ by singing a song about it, and flashing a t-shirt over a beer belly about it.  I get that people love her, but how genius to package up, ME ME ME, as fun for YOU YOU YOU.  And make it a great selling issue at the same time.  I guess that does make it fun?  For Ellen and her powerful CV anyway…

Same goes for her building her twitter members, and her campaign to ‘dominate the world’…….  She somehow, cleverly gets her audience to work for her.  She uses her airtime to promote herself, when her competitors are filling the space with what will entertain the audience.

Although I feel that Oprah certainly has been accused of being ‘god like’, I will say that what I like about her is that it feels that her show is about the people.  Whereas Ellen’s seems a lot about…… just her!

  1. Ellen, Ellen, Ellen. I think Ellen has has strong sex appeal to straight women, more than any gay woman I know, “Everybody, loves Ellen”. I was very much into her show a while back, but got bored and I think it is due to the same rotating week, same game this week, same game next week, but I find when I do flick onto her show I want to watch more of her, sometimes she is geeky and not funny other times hilarious, and she is very self promoting, but we seem to love her. I think there are a lot of women in her audience that secretly hope she flirts with them, and I would have to say if I was visiting America I would request tickets to her show.

    • So true! My mother actually said to me one day “Oh look Ellen’s on I love her so much. I think she’s absolutely gorgggggggeous. I’d turn for her!” Not quite what I’d hoped to hear from mum but I think you’re right. I think there’s probably alot of straight women mesmerised by her, and the little gay fantasy that they probably don’t admit to their girlfriends.

    • I think one day that could be fun!!!!! Although you know, I think we’re in the minority of not being fans of her show. I’ve tried so much to get into it and I just can’t. I love that it makes people happy and that she’s not bitchy……or not much…but nup, I end up doing the switch.

  2. You know I never really thought of that! But now that you’ve brought it to my attention I can see your point!
I AM an ELLEN fan, just as much as I AM an OPRAH fan (even tho I hardly EVER watch either) But both of them have their appeal I guess!
The point here with them is that BOTH are strong independent women, both GIVE to the world in some way, shape or form, AND they use their fame and fortune to help those less fortunate, which I believe is great!
Ellen has helped MANY closet gay women OUT themselves, and OPRAH has helped many african american women have a voice. I say women mainly coz lets face it, both shows are targeted at WOMEN….
I say, if it helps people become more confident in themselves to know there are other people out there going through the same stuff…. IT’S ALL GOOD!!! X

    • Yes you’re totally right! As I said, I think they’re both amazing, and they have both done so much in different ways to women and the world. It doesn’t matter at all that I’m not a fan of watching Ellen because millions of others are. I’d love to half a 100th of their success. I’d dance in front of a whole audience for that too. ha ha.x

  3. Hey when we did that photo shoot, that was the SCARIEST, most confronting thing I’ve ever done in my life! (nude women unite)hahah… but I would never have done it if it wasn’t for YOU.
Amber, you don’t give yourself enough credit for how many people’s lives you have touched in some way, and in reality you are JUST LIKE Oprah and Ellen!
Who cares that ure not in a relationship, or have any children…what you give to the WORLD is YOU…and we all love you for it!
You have so many people to support you , whatever you do, family and friends are all you need and if ure happy with all that, then a big PFFFFFT to the rest of it! Some of us were just born to be OURSELVES, successful in whatever way… 🙂

    • Oh Mel, you nearly made me cry!!!!!!!! Thank you so much sweety. That’s so kind of you. And YES, that day was scary as hell, but there was something very surreal and emotional (in a good way) about it too. It was like we became this big bunch of sisters for a short time. I felt so much love in the room. It was one of the best days ever.xx

    • that’s actually an interesting point! it’s fascinating to see how certain people attract certain fans.

p.s thank you…. ha ha…..maybe one day. At least I know I’ve got one viewer now.x

  4. OMG did anyone watch ROVE, what’s the difference. Even he said it was entertainment, not 60 mins. That is the difference! You have light, have fun entertainment, then you have Oprah, emotional. There both good in different ways
