I highlighted a story about Naomi Campbell last week that wasn’t your average story that we’ve come to expect from the supermodel!  Or at least, that’s what I thought then.  Now I realise it’s totally under the usual ‘Naomi’ theme.

Anyway, she appeared at The Hague to give evidence against Charles Taylor, the ex Liberian President, who is accused of directing the rebels behind Sierra Leone’s civil war, which resulted in 100,000 of his fellow men being murdered, and countless others raped and mutilated.

If you saw the movie Blood Diamond starring Leonardo DiCaprio, you’d know all about this horrific story.   Basically, the mining of ‘blood’ diamonds by Taylor’s gangs was all about getting money to buy weapons.

So what happened with Naomi back in 1997, is that she was invited along with Mia Farrow and other celebrities to the relaunch in South Africa of the Blue Train (a luxury rail service).  The invitation came from none other than Nelson Mandela.

Apparently there was a whole range of celebrity events around this relaunch, with all them helping to benefit Mandela’s children’s charities.

Mia Farrow, who was called to give evidence at The Hague yesterday – days after Naomi begrudgingly gave hers – says on the night of this particular dinner hosted by Mandela, Mr. Mandela’s partner, Graca Machel, pointed out Charles Taylor and moved her and her three children away from him, Ms Farrow said, with words to the effect of: “He’s not supposed to be here.”

Naomi Campbell says that after that dinner, and in the middle of the night there was a knock at her hotel door, to which she found a man who handed her a bag, which contained ‘dirty diamonds’.

She made out as if she ‘presumed’ they were from Charles Taylor etc.

However Mia has contradicted her Naomi by saying that Campbell boasted at a breakfast the next day, as both women prepared for a charity event with Nelson Mandela, that the gift was from Taylor, Britain’s Telegraph reported.  “Naomi Campbell joined us and before she even sat down she recounted the events of the (previous) evening,”

Farrow testified. “She said that in the night she had been awakened. Some men were knocking at her door. They were sent by Charles Taylor and they had given her a huge diamond. Naomi Campbell said they came from Charles Taylor.”

And then in another blow, which might feel like one of those items Naomi’s been known to throw at her assistants – her ex Agent Carole White, told the court that Tailor and her then-client enjoyed each other’s company at the dinner table.   “I think she was flirting with him and he was flirting back,” she said.

At one point during the meal, her manager said that Naomi leaned back to speak to her.  She said she “was very excited and she told me he was going to give her some diamonds,” White told the court.

She said the supermodel darling later appeared disappointed when she saw the uncut diamonds and said they were  “not very impressive and not enormously big.”

Oh dear! I wonder if she weighed up how disappointed Taylor’s victim’s families might be when they found out their loved one had died for these ‘not quite big enough’ gems?

Looks like for Naomi, diamonds should no longer be her best friend.
